about
This song was recorded for the sexy queer indie movie "Beautiful Something". We made a video, too, a version of which is on the DVD of the movie, and a different one on youtube. I thought an old sentimental song should be playing in the bar that one of our characters walks into, so I recorded it with an ear toward a more 1961-ish vintage sound.
Like in "Beautiful Something", the narrator is in a mood, and their judgment is questionably reliable.
lyrics
There's a light in the window
Of the house on the corner
I pass every day
See myself in it, on my way
I wonder, to whoever (sic)
Your house is my mirror
Are you sad as can be
Have you everything but me?
We'll never let on
Can't say that you're lonely
And everybody goes,
As everybody knows
In winter, it gets darker
Take a walk by the water
The light shines on,
Though all of the love is gone
They don't want you, and they'll haunt you
You're restless, defenseless
But your dreams have come true
Now, nobody pities you
You'll never let on
Can't say that you're lonely
And everybody goes,
As everybody knows
One day, I'll be richer
There'll be champagne, there'll be glitter
And a house on a corner
Like you
I'll be fearless, I'll be bold,
I'll be ninety years old,
With a light in my window too
Can't say that you're lonely
So weak, to be lonely
Everybody,
everybody knows
