about
We recorded this live on camera in just a few days for the NPR Tiny Desk Contest.
This version here on bandcamp includes more editing and mixing time and sounds a bit more like a real studio recording (though, I mean, it still isn't).
I had this idea that (regardless of where on the political spectrum you place yourself) if you acknowledge that the world's scientists have identified human-influenced climate change, plastics and such in the oceans ruining the food chain, etc etc, you might compare our species to a bunch of loud jerks in a bar. This both amused and depressed me just enough that I needed to write a song.
If you feel it, feel free to share it; if you are working on a relevant project or organization and would like to include/involve this song in any way, please contact me; thank you.
lyrics
It's around twelve o'clock-- Our ride is Taking Off.
We only wanted a place we could dance, and maybe talk
Wish we could stay, it's still mostly okay, but I
don't feel like we're really wanted
So, another round of shots! Let's forget what it costs
We're in so much hot water now, why should we stop?
We'll be stupid and proud, and we'll see ourselves out
With a whimper, tired, hollow and haunted.
We don't know our limits; we don't know when to quit;
Sorry bout the mess, we will pay for all of it.
Now, we've got these few minutes to spare...
I'm speaking my mind, you guys, and I don't care
If we don't get ahold of ourselves,
(let there be no doubt)
If we don't take care of this place
we're gonna get kicked out
It used to be so cool here; the atmosphere's changed,
(It's evident now. Don't deny it.)
She'll forget about us, better off when we're gone, like,
“Finally, a little quiet”
Wasted and wrecked, we ignored the advice
Trashed the place and used half the ice, you guys,
If we stopped consuming every damn thing,
It wouldn't be the end of the world.
If we don't get ahold of ourselves,
(let there be no doubt)
If we don't take care of this place
we're gonna get kicked out
it's been a good time good time
(everybody's watching)
One more “for the road.”
Let's get tanked up! Dig up more of that old stuff,
Ignore those regulars backed in a corner, pouting.
Don't mind our pipes? Hey it's our last night!
Can't hear each other over all the shouting...
Your spirits are low? That's “reason for concern,”
but flaming drinks on tap, we'll sit and watch 'em burn.
Look at the view - I'm seeing five stars,
Open 24 hours a day,
But if we're done, we'll hit the next inhospitable place
30 million miles away...
If we don't get ahold of ourselves
(let there be no doubt)
If we don't take care of this place...
we're gonna get kicked out
And if we don't take care of this place,
one thing I'm sure about,
If we don't get it together on this,
we're gonna get kicked out
(They're turning all the lights on!)
we're gonna get kicked out
(Last call!)
We're gonna get kicked
